“Hi, my name is Julia Rodgerson and I live in Burlington, ON. I recently graduated from the HWLC program in July 2021. I have always been involved in Fitness, both personally and as a part time instructor, certified as a personal training specialist, spinning, yoga, HIIT and CrossFit. I have over 25 years of leading fitness programs (for a variety of fitness organizations) on a part-time business while working as a Marketing, Communications and Sponsorship Professional. After many years of doing this part-time, I decided to take the next step and begin my journey to supporting my dream to do this for myself and launch my own business.
I launched “Fit In Nature”, in 2020, where I lead fitness workouts in an outdoor nature setting. Targeted toward women over 40 years of age, the goal of “Fit In Nature” is to inspire others to build cardio, strength and muscle endurance, to get outside, connect with nature and have some social distancing fun in COVID times.
I had many clients asking me about nutrition and while I follow a clean eating approach to my personal diet, I needed a certification to give me the credentials and confidence to help others with their nutrition and weight loss goals. After significant research of trying to find the perfect program, I landed on FIT CHICKS, HWLC. The program did not disappoint. The systematic approach to learning, assignments and quizzes provided me with the knowledge and confidence to take my learnings and help others with their nutrition and weight loss goals. I am now rebranding my business to be called “Fit In Nature, Holistic Nutrition and Fitness. The goal is to inspire women, over 40 years of age, to build cardio, strength and muscle endurance, connect with nature and a natural approach to achieving their nutrition and weight loss goals. It is very early days and with COVID restrictions now being lifted, I feel confident to take the step into realizing my dream of owning my own business in the health and wellness space.
The HWLC program provided the certifications I needed, gave me practical knowledge and also worked into my very busy schedule where I could go at my own pace. The assignments were the best way for me to take knowledge from the module and practically apply it and learn it. These assignments are also opportunities to take the learnings and create your own templates to leverage after the program. This was excellent!
I have always wanted to lead my own business in the fitness and wellness space. With COVID, there were a lot of ladies in my community looking for a safe place to workout that was not virtual. They were looking for a way to meet others, socialize and also workout. I took this as an opportunity to take the baby step to starting my own business. An 8 week program that combines hiking and Functional fitness workout in the great outdoors. The combination of adding in the nutritional component is the next evolution to providing a fully holistic approach to supporting others with their lifestyle, fitness and nutritional goals.
If you are thinking about getting certified, take the leap. Even if its for your own personal information, the learnings, philosophy and approach to supporting a healthy way living life everyday is practical and easy to do. I specifically enjoy learning more about the digestive and gut health and balancing macronutrients.
I am now confident I can take the next step in my newly created business and offer nutritional coaching. Since graduating, I have 5 clients who are working with me to support their weight loss goals. The plan is to use these clients to continue my learning and development and coaching skills for weight loss. Gain their feedback on my skills and approach as well see their results. Were they successful? What are their personal challenges etc. After gaining this learning and feedback, I plan to relaunch my business to include the nutritional component. ”
Apple & Kale Weight Loss Green Smoothie
A green smoothie means it contains “greens” like kale, spinach, collard greens, beet greens, arugula, mustard greens and more. All greens contain a good sources of fibre and are low in calories and packed full of good nutrients and minerals. I usually buy packages of already cut up spinach or kale and stick it in my freezer right when I get home from the grocery store. This ensures I always have a fresh source of greens at my fingertips. This recipe contains both spinach and kale. Spinach is slightly less bitter tasting than kale so, if you are just starting out on your green smoothie journey, you may want to start with just doubling up on the spinach and then begin to experiment with kale and then go to stronger tasting greens in a couple of months like arugula, mustard greens and dandelion leaves.
