Today we’re talking about belfies.

If anyone is like me, who has no idea what belfie is, apparently it’s a selfie of your butt. A butt selfie.

If you’re someone who is already in fitness or you’re thinking about going into fitness and you’re on Instagram, which most people are, and you’re going through all these accounts of fitness professionals, and you’re thinking … I’m not saying all of them, but there’s a lot of them out there who their whole Instagram feed is not any exercises. It’s just pictures- of their butts.

One question we get a lot from students in our Academy, “Okay, if I want to be in fitness and I’ve got to …” We talk about growing your social media profiles and all that. They think, “Do I need to post pictures of my butt? Is that the only way to get clients?”

I find this to be so funny, but it’s so true. I find it funny because it’s just such a random word to me, but at the same time, it is true that people question it. They’re like, “How do I get a following then? If I’m not posting a picture of my butt, who’s going to follow me? Who’s going to care about what I have to say?” The thing is, is that you don’t have to do it.

If that’s what you choose to do, that’s 100% cool. That is totally your prerogative, but if you don’t want to you do not have to. One of the things that we always say is if you are posting these things, if you are posting these belfies, you have to think about what audience are you trying to attract?   If you’re sitting there right now and you’re considering, “I’m going to do this.” You’re sitting there and you’re like, “All right, this is going to happen. This is happening in my world,” who are you trying to attract with this? Is it your target audience? Is it quality people that you are attracting with that? Is it the people that you are trying to communicate with? If it’s not, then does it really matter?

Yeah, because you’ll see … I know it’s very easy to fall into that Instagram rabbit hole where you’re suddenly like, “Okay, that person has a million followers. Oh, my gosh. I need to do what they’re doing.” Which Instagram too, it’s a whole different beast. Everyone has a different agenda with their account. Some people want to go on their account and they want to get brand sponsors. Some people, they’re trying to attract their ideal client.

People have different agendas. First of all, you’ve got to ask yourself, what is your agenda with yours? Then second,  if your target or your ideal client, let’s say, is girls who are wanting to go on spring break vacation, let’s say. You’re helping girls get spring break ready. Maybe then, yes, you’re going to post some more bathing suit pictures, and you on the beach, and maybe some butt shots, or whatever, but most of the time you’re going to be attracting a lot of people who just want to look at your butt. You might be attracting a lot of DMs that maybe are unwarranted or unwanted.

Also, too, if your target audience, let’s say, is women who just had a baby, are they really going to be wanting to look at pictures of your butt? Probably not.

You have to think, “Is this going to attract my ideal client or is it actually going to completely push them away?”

If it’s going to push them away then maybe you need to reconsider what your feed is saying to them because your feed it’s like your new business card. It’s another reflection of you.

Then the second thing is, if you’re thinking about posting the belfie you also have to think … If you’re sitting there, and you’re on your phone, and you’re nervous to hit send, you’re like, “Oh, I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know if I feel good about this. I don’t know if it feels right to me,” you might want to just pause on it, maybe sleep on it, maybe think about it a little bit more because you don’t want it to compromise who you are. You don’t want to do it just because you feel the pressure to do it. You want to do it because it’s something that you just actually want to do.

Like Kim Kardashian. She’s totally unapologetic about the fact that she just wants to share pictures of her butt, and naked photos, and everything else. She’s totally cool with it, and that’s fine. All the power to her, but if that’s something that you don’t feel empowered by, if it’s actually making you feel compromised as opposed to empowered then you probably don’t want to do it. Don’t do it just to try to get more likes because your likes might not end up even being worth it in the end.

Now, when it comes down to building your fitness business, which is whatever you want it to be, right?

It’s whatever you want it to be, whatever message you want to get across, it’s got to be authentic to you. It’s got to feel good, and it should never feel like you’re being fake, or you’re being weird, or you’re doing something that isn’t in line with your belief system. Of course, at first social media’s always awkward because you’re kind of like, “Okay, I’m pulling back the curtain to things that are going on in my life,” but when it comes down to building your fitness career you do not have to compromise what you believe in to become successful. Do you really want a million followers that 999,000 of them are not even people who are ever going to buy your services? No.

They’re only going to like the next belfie you post.

I just want you guys to really kind of take this to heart. If you’re going to belfie, own it, but remember you don’t need to and you can still create the most incredible social media accounts that are going to bring a lot of value to your right clients.
